IRANIAN ELECTRICITY TO FUEL THE SYRIAN WAR MACHINE

The Syrian electricity minister was in Tehran this week to sign four contracts with Iran concerning the supply of Iranian power generation equipment to Syria. The contracts are estimated to be worth 2.5 billion Syrian pounds. The minister stressed the deal was the result of a “strategic partnership” between the two countries.

COMMENT FROM THE EDITOR:
Like the oil and food that Iran is supplying to Syria, this electricity will most likely go towards fuelling the Syrian regime’s war machine, or serve the well-off, pro-regime areas in the country. It certainly won’t go to the millions of civilians who have been suffering for more than two years from lengthy power cuts, with no lighting or heating. The cuts are usually either a collective punishment, or due to the destruction caused by the shelling, or simply because the country’s infrastructure can no longer cope with the war. Yet it seems the war in Syria, especially with the western sanctions against both countries, is turning into a lucrative market for the Iranian government!

CELEBRATING SEPAH QODS AND HEZBOLLAH FIGHTERS DYING IN SYRIA

A news agency close to the Iranian security services has released images from the high-profile 40-day commemoration of an Iranian who was killed in Syria. Mohammad Hassan Khalili, also known as Rasoul Khalili, is being described by Iranian media as a “defender” of the holy Shia shrine of Sayyda Zeinab in Damascus, who had “voluntary” travelled to Syria but was killed in the conflict.

According to Bulletin News, the ceremony was attended by Haj Agha Shirazi, Khamenei’s representative within the Revolutionary Guards’ Qods Force, who reportedly made a speech. Present also was Qaany’s deputy, the successor of the Qods Force’s commander.

Meanwhile, a number of Hezbollah Lebanon’s fighters who had been killed in fighting in Syria have been celebrated by the group, in public ceremonies in Lebanon, as “martyrs” and “heroes”.

COMMENT FROM THE EDITOR:
It seems that news agencies close to the Iranian security services and Hezbollah Lebanon no longer shy away from broadcasting news and images about Sepah Qods and Hezbollah fighters dying in Syria. Indeed, it is no longer a secret that both groups are directly involved in the fighting there, and no one denies it any more, as they used to do only a few months ago. But even though these images and reports represent vital evidence regarding the Iranian regime’s complicity in the war crimes being committed in Syria, it looks like they are also being used as a propaganda tool to recruit more fighters to go and defend the holy Shi’a shrines in Syria.
